Today I want to share a ca. 1950 Art Deco dresser I recently refinished. Here is the after.
You are getting a partial look at my new porch in this picture. I'm absolutely in love with my new porch! The porch is something else I will be sharing with you at a later date. Now, here is the before of the dresser.
I picked this piece up at a local resale shop. At one time it had a lovely veneer but the previous owners had stripped it off, stained it, and applied a satin polyurethane finish. And they applied it very badly with runs and drips everywhere.
The wood under the veneer was not meant to be seen and was not very pretty. So I started out by painting it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in a lovely, lavender gray called "Paloma".
Once that was dry I used a piece of lace, with a rose pattern, as a stencil and sprayed it with a matte, white spray paint. I then had a lovely looking piece of furniture and could have left it like this.
I just couldn't stop there I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted and it wasn't quite there yet. So after waxing the entire piece with clear wax I mixed a glaze.
I had a glaze color in mind and knew just what I needed to mix to achieve it. I took a red solo cup and put about three quarters of a cup of Valspar Clear Mixing Glaze in it followed by about three tablespoons of ASCP in Graphite, and lastly I used acrylic craft paint in purple, about two tablespoons of the purple.
I ended up with this. It looks dark gray but when I applied it to the dresser you could see the purple.
I applied the glaze and let it sit for a moment then wiped it away with a soft cloth.
After the glaze was dry I applied another coat of clear wax to the entire piece. I really liked the hardware so I kept it and painted it with silver gilding wax. I just love my silver and gold gilding wax.
I just adore this color. It will go with almost any decor don't you think?
Now, the large, very heavy, round mirror had some issues. It wasn't cracked but had some, I don't know what else to call them, but chips along the right edge. So my answer was to spray the lace stencil onto the mirror. I think it adds a nice touch and can simply be scraped off if you get tired of it as the edges of the mirror really aren't that bad.
I liked the lavender so much I also painted a jewelry armoire the same color. I'll be sharing it soon.

Oh, I love this Peggy! You did a fabulous job. Love the technique you used. We bought one for my daughter almost just like this and I painted it in ASCP Emile! I need to send you a pic so you can give me inspiration.
She's happy with it the way it is, but I think it's needs something. Have to show her yours!! LOL
