I've been having so much fun lately finding and painting furniture. I sometimes can't decide what is more fun finding the pieces or refurbishing them.

Here is a piece I recently finished. An early 20th century cedar armoire/cabinet. It didn't really have much going for it. Just plain cedar with no texture, paint, or anything to make it interesting. It was so old it had even lost its cedar scent!

The gentleman I bought the cabinet from had started restoring it. He had filled the knot holes and sanded the piece. I wanted to give it some interest but did not want to add a graphic or anything like that so I decided to give it some character with paint.

I first painted it with Annie Sloan's Coco and after that was thoroughly dry I gave it a coat of Antibes Green.

Boy is that a bright green! I love it! But I wasn't through with it yet. I next added a sample of Valspar paint I had in a rust color. Yes, you can put latex paint on top of chalk paint or vice versa.

Once that was dry I added the final color, ASCP Louis Blue.

After the paint was dry I waxed the entire piece with clear wax. I then applied a wash I made by mixing Coco, a little burnt umber paint, and water. I brushed it on in large sections and let it set a couple of minutes and then wiped off the excess with a soft cloth.

When the wash had dried I took 100 grit sandpaper and distressed the piece all over. Finally I gave it another coat of clear wax. On the inside I gave it a good scrubbing and inserted a new wooden dowel for hanging clothes.

In this side view you can see the various colors peeking through. I really love the rust and blue together. Now it looks as if it has been painted several times over the years and is full of personality.

This would be a great piece in a boys room or, I think, a girls room as it is such a soft color. Put some baskets in the bottom and it will provide you with a lot of extra storage.

Its back to the shop where I am working on another stand alone jewelry box and a Art Deco dresser.
