Lil’ Red Accent Table

Hello everyone hope you’re having a great day.  Today I’m sharing the redo of a small accent table I picked up at a yard sale.  Here’s what I started with.

Notice how the finished has been rubbed off of the top. It has a little open shelf below the top and I think it was probably used at one time for a desk as there was quite a lot of very old gum stuck to the bottom of it. Smile

I couldn’t wait to try out my new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint color “Emperor’s Silk”. It looks quite bright in the can but here’s how it looks after two coats on the little table with no primer.

I love how it dries to a lovely aged red you might see on a antique piece. It would be lovely on a front door don’t you think?

Gosh look at my grass and we water ours! If you have any rain in your area of the country send us some down here in Texas we really need it. Anyway here is the finished product.

I applied a coat of ASCP clear, soft, wax and sprayed on a lace accent to the top using a piece of lace that I had as a stencil and a soft cream spray paint.  Then distressed the table in areas that would naturally have worn and applied another coat of wax.

The lace design has a pretty rose detail.  I hope you enjoyed this lil' project. I’ll have pics of a dinette set in the next couple of days.

Thanks for dropping by ya’ll.

Free Graphics

I am starting a new weekly blog where I will be posting free vintage graphics.

The first ones I am sharing with you are some beautiful images I acquired from an antique baby book I picked up from an estate sale.
The hand written entries date from 1924 and are so sweet as they detail the birth and first year of the baby’s life. Love it! Don’t think I could ever sell it!
So I hope you enjoy these images and can use them in some of your craft projects.  Just right click on the image and choose "save image as" to save onto your computer. Enjoy.

Feather Your Nest With Embroidery

I thought I'd share one of the pieces from my other hobby with you today as I am still limited in what I can do as far as painting furniture.

I have enjoyed doing counted cross stitch for years and had the pleasure of sharing this hobby with my mother while she lived. She requested that I teach her and she ended up teaching me more than I could have ever taught her.  Mother's work was perfection ever stitch had the exact same tension like they had been done by a machine.  I still strive to come even close in matching the beauty of her work.

The piece I am sharing with you I recently finished and for the lack of anywhere else to put it I hung it over my bed.  Now I just recently decorated my bedroom in yellows and blues and as you will see this picture is in rich reds, purples, and golds so it doesn't match really well but I just enjoy looking at it and decided it was my bedroom if I wanted it in there I'd put it in there! lol

I love cross stitching people! Especially Victorian images but this lovely Roman styled beauty really caught my eye. She took me several months in my spare time to finish. I have done others as large but given them away as gifts this one I decided to keep for awhile.

Look at that expression very haughty. Notice the gold edging that goes around entire image.  There was a lot of gold thread in this one and it is sort of difficult to work with as it wanted to shred if you have to take any back out and believe me sometimes I felt like I took out more than I put in. :-)

Doing needlework is a great way to add quality inexpensive art to your home and they make great heirloom pieces to hand down through your family.

It's also fun! Because I spent so much time on my haughty Roman I decided not to frame her myself so I carried  her to Hobby Lobby while they were having a half price sale.  I chose a hammered, old gold finished frame with a two layered matting in various creams and a maroon velvet.

The last couple of years counted cross stitch has been out paced by scrap booking as a favorite hobby but I hope it comes back in popularity soon as it is such a calming and rewarding hobby.

It is also a great way to decorate your home on a budget by making pictures, pillows, bedspreads, tablecloths, etc... If you have never tried counted cross stitch give it a try it is easy to learn and very rewarding.

I Don't Decorate For Halloween But If I Did...

Well I'm still down with my foot surgery but don't worry as usual I'm cheating.  I've been painting dining chairs in my den. I paint a little then prop my foot up a little. LOL

I've been reading a lot of blogs while I've been down and everyone is decorating for fall mostly with Halloween decorations. Me? I don't decorate for Halloween.  It's a holiday I don't like much and as we live in a rural area I have no trick or treaters as any children that live nearby go into town except my husband that is. So ever since my children moved out I just decorate for fall and then Thanksgiving.

But as I was cruising the web I thought what if I did decorate? How would I decorate as I don't like orange and black? Well, I found a few ideas and I thought I would share them with you.

Starting outside I love these white lighted pumpkins and white lights on the tree I think this would be really pretty leading up to my front door. I found this picture on Pinterest and you can follow my Pinterest here.

This would lead to my front door which would look something like the following:

Of course it would look like this if I had an entrance with wide steps and columns. :-)

Once you were inside no scary witches, cobwebs and spiders, or carved pumpkins for me you might see some of these instead.

Gorgeous hand decorated white pumpkins by Horchow! Oops, wait Horchow? Hmm, well maybe I would make some like these. Yeah, totally doable.

The only skull you would see would be glittery pink with a pretty pink rosebud hair uh, skull piece. ;-)

She would be sitting by this pretty pink and lace hand-painted pumpkin a midst pink roses and ribbon on my mantel. Umm, if I had one that is.

I'd have lots of unusual pumpkins sitting around.

Like these that are decoupaged with scrapbook paper and stenciled from Country Living.

On my table I would have an antique wood bowl with some plush velvet pumpkins.

I'd of course have to have a little bling here and there so I would silver and gold leaf a few pumpkins and sit them on display on small gold leafed flower pots. And to top it off and keep the bling going some glittery gold pumpkin candles!

In betwixt all of this would be silver and gold sprayed chrysanthemums, artificial of course, a few pink roses, and a lot of greenery.

What do you think? Do you do something different than the norm for Halloween? Please share.

Photoshop Learning Series

Hello Everyone,

I had foot surgery so no painting for me for a few days. Geez, I'm so frustrated looking out at my carport covered in furniture some half painted and I can't get out there and work! Sigh.

Anyway I wanted to share with you a link that Suzie just put up over at The Accent Piece. It is a 31 day tutorial on how to use Photoshop!

Now if you're like me and have Photoshop you only know how to do the basics like re-size and print lol so this will be a great help and its free! Here's the link to the series:

My Button

She is focusing on helping bloggers and I really can use the help as most of my photos stink because I have no photography skills and just a simple digital camera that I sort of borrowed (kept) from my daughter. Don't worry she got a new Nikon lucky girl. Even though she's focusing on bloggers the lessons should help anyone that has Photoshop.

Anyway I thought I would share this with my followers, who I appreciate very much, and I hope you may benefit from the lessons. Ya'll don't worry I'll be up painting by Monday and will be posting new items soon. Take care and have a great weekend.

French Chocolat Graphic Table

Today I'm sharing an Ethan Allen occasional table I picked up for $10 at a resale shop.

The top was scratched and dinged up but overall it was in really good shape.  I stripped the top and lightly sanded the rest of the table then cleaned it with an all purpose cleaner.

I wanted to combine putting a French chocolat label from The Graphics Fairy and a lacy edging on the top so after stripping the top I spray painted the bottom with a textured, black paint so when I distressed it the texture would help age it.

I tried a couple of different transfer methods that did not work for me but I had good luck on the second try of the Elmer's glue & Mod Podge transfer method. It worked better the second time for me because I cut each line of the label out and laid them out one at a time.  Unfortunately, the last two lines I got a little crooked as it was hard to tell if they were even with the print facing down on the table.

To do this method you take a piece of card stock and paint a thin coat of Elmer's glue over the entire paper.  Let this dry overnight.  Then you take the dry paper & after choosing your graphic print it onto the side with the dry glue on it.  Measure where you want your graphic to be on the table then apply  a thin coat of Mod Podge to the table and lay the graphic on it really burnishing & rubbing it without tearing the paper. The second time worked better for me because I really burnished it a lot then set a heavy object on top of it to keep it from curling up around the edges and bubbling up as it dried. Let it completely dry! No peeking!

After it is completely dry take a spray bottle of water and saturate the paper then gently peel or rub the paper off.  Some of it just lifted right off but other areas I had to rub gently. Viola! Your graphic is transferred.

I think it looked pretty good for my first time trying this technique just a little crooked. Another tip is to use just your black ink cartridge to print your graphic as you can see some of my print had red and pink in it. Carefully clean up the excess glue with a damp rag. Let dry.

I wanted the print to be a little clearer so I went over it with a fine point Sharpie.  After doing this the print wanted to smear because the Sharpie ink was not drying so I sprayed it with a matte, clear sealer which stopped the smearing.

I then found a pretty piece of lace with a scalloped edge and cut out two strips to lay along the sides.   I then took a black satin spray paint and sprayed the lace being careful and not covering up the print in the center so that the black would kind of fade from dark at the edge to lighter in center.

I then moved the lace to the other two sides not worrying that the edges did not match as I would be distressing it later.

By the way you may save the pieces of lace and use them again on another project.  I really liked this look so pretty and crisp, black and white, but this wasn't the look I wanted so I applied a coat of clear soft wax and then started distressing with a 60 grit then medium grit sandpaper. I then went back and gave it another coat of wax mixing some dark & some clear wax.  I left the wax to dry but did not buff because I wanted an aged look.

And here's the finished product.

My opinion of this transfer method is that it is not as easy as other crafters make out you really have to burnish it and make sure it adheres to the wood.  Even then it was really light in areas and its hard to tell if you have it laying straight on your project. Other than that it was the best transfer method I have tried so far.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and are inspired to try a project like this yourself.  Happy painting.
