Decorating On A Dime With Refurbished Items

Hello everyone hope all your Christmas shopping and holiday plans are going well.

I thought I would share a few home décor items I just updated. I forgot to take a picture of the items before I started but the cherub was peeling gold and some kind of green finish.  The pedestal was that ugly, solid gold they were using in the 70’s and 80’s.

First, I painted two of the items with black acrylic paint.  The cherub with flower pot was already a dark silver.

The pedestal being a solid, gold color did not show the beautiful details of the piece. It was the same with the praying angel and cherub flower pot.

To bring out those details I am going to be dry brushing them with ASCP “Old White”, but any type of latex or acrylic paint will do.  For those of you that are not familiar with this style of painting you use a dry brush and after dipping in the paint you wipe your brush on a piece of paper to remove most of the paint.

You then apply a light coat of paint going against the the details of the piece so as not to paint inside the lines of your image. This allows the images to stand out in relief against the background.

Here are the pieces with one coat of dry brushing.  Know that this is a very time consuming process and for the best results can not be rushed. Light coats with drying time in between are best.

Already you can see the details popping out against the background.

Here they are with two or three coats you can see on the paper where I wipe my brush to remove excess paint.

And here are the finished pieces.

I just love the gorgeous detail on these angels.

I didn’t even notice this evil looking face until I started dry brushing.

The next time you are at a thrift store or re-sale shop look at the ugly things too.  With a little paint and powder they could end up being a gorgeous new piece for your home. Winking smile
