Finally the Drexel Buffet

Well, I finally finished the Drexel buffet.  I have never had so much trouble finishing a piece of furniture!  Here’s the after.

Now here is the before.

This is a 1963 Drexel buffet I picked up at an estate sale.  It has the Drexel stamp in the top drawer along with the original pamphlet that came with it.

I started out by removing the doors and hardware and sanding the top.  I then painted the bottom of the buffet with Annie Sloan “Old White”.  The hardware was spray painted with a satin black.

The top I sanded down and refinished with Dark Walnut stain and then applied four coats of satin polyurethane.

This is where I had problems.  I had completed the buffet and covered it with a plastic drop cloth over night as a storm was coming through and I had it sitting out on my carport.  During the night a half full can of polyurethane was blown over onto the top, and by the time I found it the next morning it was a half inch thick all across one end of the buffet and hard, very hard.  I had to strip it down again! What a mess! Anyway here is the finished top.

A close up of the doors.  After waxing with Annie Sloan Soft Wax I slightly distressed the entire buffet focusing on the areas mostly likely to be worn.

Hope you enjoyed this before and after.  Have a great week end!

Hi Peggy! You have a good eye. Drexel is a great furniture company and this piece looks wonderful painted white.
You did have a problem! Good for you though... you stuck with it and your hard work really paid off. Just stunning!
I love working with ASCP too!

Peggy - this is such a pretty piece of funiture! I love that it has drawers in them middle and can imagine them filled with all sorts of pretty silverware and linens.

The paint job really brought out it's beauty especially in the carvings. I have a buffet (on legs)that is on the long list of projects that I need to paint. I need to find a place that sells Annie Sloan paint as I am wanting to try it - I tried making my own chalk paint but was not happy with the results though it might have been me not reading the directions right!!

Beautiful piece --you can never go wrong with the good brands made 40 or 50 years ago. Nice transformation.

Such a nice piece, such great character and pretty lines! I shuttered to read about your almost disaster - you must have magic to be able to recover and repair!
